Restoration of a Mustel Player Reed Organ
By Tom Gregory
Greetings and Happy New Year To All:
I spoke to one of my university organ professors today. He and his wife
are planning on moving to smaller living accommodations now that they are
retired.
They have offered me a their single manual Mustel (Paris) player reed
organ.
The instrument has at least twelve - sixteen sets of reeds. The organ
itself can be powered by pumping (pressure, I believe) or an electric
motor. The player unit (which has not operated in many years) works on
vacuum. I understand that the player unit uses standard 88 note rolls
or rolls which came with the organ. The organ rolls give directions on
which stops to pull!
Has anyone on the list had any experience with an instrument such as
this?
I have restored several reed organs and player/reproducing pianos. Would
this instrument require special skills for restoration?
Thanks for the information in advance.
