Dear Scott: I noted your posting on MMD of 98.01.29 and may be able to
help. First of all, though, I visited currierandives.com as suggested
and found what appears to be a MIDI file already there (I was not able
to play it since I am at the moment using a UNIX machine with no sound
card). I will try later today when I get home. Has the transcription
already been done?
I am presently transcribing some sheet music to MIDI using a optical
character recognition (OCR) program called PianoScan. This is a
product of MusiteK (I am not sure of the spelling here) who also
produce a more comprehensive (and expensive) program called MidiScan.
My own ability with a piano is so limited that to play the music and
record to MIDI in real time is out of the question. The optical
scanning technique is quicker, for me, than entering each note by hand.
In any event, the OCR is far from perfect, so significant editing is
always required before the MIDI file can be played. My own project is
to transcribe some of the piano music of Louis Moreau Gottschalk
(1829-1869) to MIDI and from thence to piano rolls.
Let me know if I can help. I would need a good clean copy of the sheet
music, either in hard copy or as a bunch of *.tif files (some other
formats are also acceptable), one per sheet.
Regards
