Value of Symphonion Music Box
By Nancy Fratti

Reply to Jan Johnson, who inquired about the value of a 17 5/8"
Symphonion.

Establishing a value has many "IFs" involved. Mechanical condition
plays the biggest factor, case style the secondary factor.

This particular size Symphonion is a little "different" because the
GERMAN Symphonion movement is used in the American case. In the
smaller sized Imperial Symphonions, the American manufactured movements
were used. The German movement has diametrically opposed combs (a comb
on the upper right and one on the lower left of the bed plate).

Discs are _really_ hard to find! In my 29 years of dealing in musical
boxes and related items, I've not had any! But, reproductions are
available at about $65 each (plus postage from England).

I currently have a similar box, a 17 5/8" Imperial Symphonion, in
a carved case, for sale. The case is in very good condition, the
mechanism is very good unrestored condition. The synchronization
between the left and right combs has to be adjusted on this machine,
and one or two dampers have to be adjusted. I'm selling it for
$5000.00 with 6 or 7 discs. IF it were restored I'd be selling it
for about $6500.

Anyone interested??
