Thorens History
By Larry Greenfield

Bill asks what is too far to wind. I don't know, but perhaps there is
a lot of spring wrapped in the barrel. Also, you do not want to wind a
spring till it can go no more, as it may get stuck, and then you are
stuck. Also, try not to let a spring wind all the way down. Also,
when you wind a spring don't wind as if you are in a contest; but with
thoughtfulness and care!

Thorens began in the 1880s. Made cylinder and disc movements.
Paillard bought the company after WW2, but then some of the Thorens
family began to reissue mechanisms in the 1970s. Disc size most
popular is 4 1/2 inch, which allows discs to be played in older as well
as more recent machines. Thorens made Edelweiss and Helvetia music
boxes, including disc mechanisms for photo albums in the early 20th
century.
