Help for Standard Action Valves
By Sam Harris
Roger, did you seal the pouches? When I first joined the MMD I had
your very problem but only with about 5 notes. They would work great
as separate units but when assembled and on light pumping they would
fail.
I could not figure it out until I realized (with the advise from
MMD members) that the secondary pouch leather was very leaky, and
especially on these 5 notes. After applying 2 coats of the 50/50
rubber cement mixture the whole action came alive! I reported this to
the group and was warned that this could not be the problem and that
the problems would resurface but to this day with almost daily use
these notes have yet to fail. Just before Christmas I ran the 88-note
test roll and all things still look good. I do not know if this is
your problem but it is something to think about.
Concerning your wind motor problems, no matter what is wrong elsewhere,
if the wind motor and it's governor are in proper order the motor
should run correctly. I'm sure you have tried adjusting the spring
tension. Also make sure the hinged end is secure and that the knife
valve inside is coated with graphite and free to move. The type of
cloth used on the governor pneumatic would effect it's general
resistance to movement but this should be compensated for by spring
adjustments unless the material used was extremely thick or thin.
You should be able to smooth out the acceleration/deceleration of the
motor upon harder/lighter pedaling by weakening/strengthening the
spring. Be sure your not mistaking looping or a binding transmission
for governor problems. When you tested the motor did it run smoothly
under low suction and did you add any resistance by hand when
administering this test? Did you re-test the motor after it was
connected to the transmission?
If any of this seems too elementary then please forgive me and if any
of this is in error please let us all know.
