Player Organ and Reproducing Piano rolls on CD
By Jim Edwards
A few days ago Bruce Clark inquired about player organ recording
available on CD. I am happy to report that at least one such recording
exists. The bad news if it will not be an easy CD to find.
Several years ago I reviewed for CLAVIER MAGAZINE such a recording on
the Intercord label from West Germany distributed in this country by
Allegro Imports. The number on the disc is Intercord Int 860.858 and
it is entitled Welte Philharmonic Organ. It is a Welte reproducer made
in 1925 and restored by a mechanical musical instrument museum in Linz.
The recording was issued in 1987 and is well worth having.
The Intercord company also did at least two other reproducing CD's
featuring a Welte-Mignon mechanism. I found these two discs very
realistic and comfortable to listen to, not like many other CD's which
do a disservice to the player piano. One of these discs is entitled
Vladimir Horowitz 1926 (Int 860.864) and the other is called
Welte-Mignon 1905-1914 (Int 860.855).
For listing of the actual rolls and performers found on these three
disc look up my original review in CLAVIER. Happy hunting for the
discs! By the way, the two Welte piano CDs are made with a great
restored Vorsetzer hooked up to a most powerful and juicy BIG STEINWAY.

[ I found the Horowitz CD in Germany; it's very nice. The production
[ was supervised by Welte expert Hans-W. Schmitz of Stuttgart.
[ Several rolls were lent by Siegfrieds Mechanisches Musikkabinett --
[ Joerg Wendel: can you supply the Intercord CDs to us overseas
