Carl Dodrill's question about converting a Pedal grand from 65/88
format to full Duo-Art configuration presents a challenge to the
rebuilder. First, fitting most of the components under the piano may
be next to impossible as the main beams are probably in the old radial
format. That is, the beams radiate from point just aft of the
pneumatic stack. If that is the case, very little room is available
for a Duo-Art expression box and definitely no room for a pump and
motor.
A peek under the piano will reveal whether a 10 inch by 16 inch space
is available to accommodate the Duo-Art expression box. These aren't
exact numbers, but are just about the minimum -- usually more space is
allowed. Duo-Art Pumps come in two sizes, 15 inch and 17 inch (square).
If there is space under the piano, which I doubt, the next challenge is
to replace the tracker bar. Absent from the 65/88-note tracker will be
the eight expression holes and also most likely, the soft pedal hole.
Replacing the tracker bar is not a big deal, but the 65/88-note
capability will be very difficult to retain.
Most avid foot pedalers would love to have this instrument the way it
is. Why not just get it and enjoy the pleasures of a good Themodist
system?
