I've put the following on my web page for everyone's amusement:
"The orchestrion was made by the Marquette Piano Company. Although
using a standard 9-to-the-inch tracker bar, it had a layout that
permitted a greater piano range, while keeping almost the same
compliment of percussion instruments as the O-roll layout. In
addition, it boasted 2 ranks of pipes, plus an extra solo instrument
that could be either a piccolo or a xylophone.
"The rolls were mostly QRS originals modified to suit the different
format. The modifications were both transpositions to fit the piano
scale, plus addition of percussion instruments, and controls for the
solo work.
"I've been involved in editing some M-rolls to remove original factory
defects due to improperly maintained perforating equipment. Along the
way, I found an example of a QRS based M-roll arrangement, along with
the original QRS roll upon which it is based.
"Having done a pretty good simulation of a Cremona, I tried my hand at
"orchestrating" a different QRS original. The trick here is to see if
you can guess which one was done in the early 20's and which was done
in 1997."
When you get to the page, near the top, just under the LinkExchange
banner, is a "new" link to the entry.
