I think it's great that other topics besides mechanical music are
discussed in the MMD.  It broadens our perspective of the world,
instead of making mechanical music a microcosm unrelated to anything
else.  The occasional diversion is refreshing and stimulates thought.

I receive a quarterly newsletter from a national academic organization.
This newsletter stays strictly on-topic and never wanders off the
subject.  It is the most boring piece of mail I receive and a total
waste of paper.  How I wish they could be more like the MMD!
