With all the information on highly specialized subjects available
on the Internet, I for one, believe it works best to stay within a
relatively narrow range of subject matter, within one reference
framework. On the other hand, each of us using MMDigest has a
particular interest within the Mechanical Music subject. The first
thing I do is scan the subject titles and then read only the ones of
particular interest to me, much as I do with AMICA or other magazines.
I notice on AOL, one of the problems is keeping a chatroom onto a
particular subject. Invariably some persons will drift to more and
more unrelated subject matters. Like any program, one of the jobs of
the people in charge is to keep on target with the objectives of the
program.
So, what are the objectives of MMD? Technical support? Idea exchange?
Swap meet? Chitchat on world affairs? Training people to use the
English language better? Exchange of information on how people cele-
brate or don't celebrate Christmas around the world?
They are all interesting subjects to someone. If 90% of the subject
matter is on target for the main subjects, a little variation can be
refreshing. All in all, MMD has been about on target for me. If MMD
keeps growing, it might work best if there are departments such as
Technical discussions, Sales & Want Ads, and a Social Club. Anyway,
keep up the fine work.
