Bernt Damm mentions losing contact with Hans Schmitz. He is listed in
the MBSI directory as being at Pfauenstrasse 6, Stuttgart D-70563,
Deutschland; phone +49-0711-733070.
I believe Hans was/is working on a history of the Welte factories from
the German point of view. When he learned that Charles Davis Smith had
a Welte history-cum-catalog in the works, he protested to Charles what
he saw as an American invasion of a field of research that should be
left to a German. Of course Charles was not deterred, feeling that
there was room for two historians to work in friendly competition and
that he was in a better position to deal with the Licensee history and
with American Welte interests after they were adjudged to be enemy
properties during World War I.
Charles Smith's Welte history, edited by Dick Howe, was published
posthumously by AMICA (almost sold out, as of today). Was Hans
Schmitz's history ever published?

[ Gerhard Dangel-Reese, music curator at Augustinermuseum, Freiburg,
[ wrote in Digest 970107:
[
[> I hope that this Autumn the Welte-roll catalogue (made by me and
[> Hans-W. Schmitz of Stuttgart) will be published. This will be a
[> non-profit publication, made by the Freiburg University's library.
[> The catalogue will be sold most probably by the museum or the
[> library to cover some of the cost.
[
[ In later private correspondence Gerhard was concerned about funds
[ at the University. The book project may be quite delayed.
