A player piano technician friend of mine joked to me recently about
when he goes into a home where the Ampico hasn't been used in years,
and he's asked to fix it for the annual Christmas party.
If he finds an old Ampico Christmas roll in it, then he knows he's come
into a Christian home. Likewise, when he goes into a home where he
finds either the "Fiddler On The Roof" roll by Dr. William Flynt, or
the QRS long-playing version, he assumes that home to be a Jewish home.
"Hmmm," replied I. "Did you ever see a roll in the piano by QRS of
Chanukah melodies?" No, he wasn't aware of it. But we had that roll
when our kids were little, and we still have it, and cherish it.
I wonder whether anyone else pulls that one out each December, as do
we? It's a pleasant word roll.
And of course, happy Chanukah as well as Merry Christmas to Jewish and
Christian readers. And to everyone, Happy New Year!
Tom Steuer
P.S. I enjoy the Ampico and Duo-Art Christmas rolls, the Chanukah roll,
AND the "Fiddler" roll (the Flynt version).
