I went on a weekend trip recently and had some experiences that
I'd like to share with the group.
First, I had an appointment in Wichita, KS, and since I was there,
I stopped by Player Piano Company. When I walked in the door, Durrell
Armstrong was listening to George Bogatko's tape of player piano music,
and really enjoying it. Durrell commented that he thought George was
the best arranger to come along in a long time. Nice work, George!
Later that evening, I visited my niece and her family in Guthrie, OK,
north of Oklahoma City. Guthrie has preserved many of its nineteenth
century buildings in the downtown area, giving the city an ambiance of
the past. There are many antique shops in Guthrie. (Are you
listening, collectors?) Unfortunately (or, fortunately for my bank
account), I didn't have time to visit them.
My niece and her husband also own a player piano. It appears that
this instrument gets much use, both from roll-playing and from their
children (ages 10, 7 and 5) practicing piano lessons. I am a third-
generation player piano owner, and my niece is a fourth-generation
owner. Since her children have also taken an interest in piano,
it is highly possible that player piano ownership will reach a fifth
generation. :-) It's nice to know that there are future enthusiasts
out there.
