Internet Source for Piano Music
By Jim Hendershot

I read in yesterday's MMD a note from someone who wants to convert a
baby grand to read music from discs, and asked about downloading music
from the web.

There are many places to download music in the form of MIDI files from
the web. Some of these files work well with reproducing pianos, such
as the Disklavier or PianoDisc, but many do not. Files made with the
average MIDI keyboard may have incorrect dynamics, timing, etc. when
applied to a mechanical instrument. This can make MIDI files
problematic for mechanical instruments. Let the downloader beware...

In any case, there is a site with Disklavier files to download in their
native format. Also, you will find various links, performance reviews
of commercial disks, tips and other items of interest relating to the
Disklavier.

The URL of "The Well-Tempered Disklavier" is:

    http://www.radiodesign.com/wtd.htm

The site is not affiliated with Yamaha, and there are no charges for
donwloading the files. Submissions are always welcome, and conversions
of rolls are invited. Public domain restrictions obviously apply. If
you have questions, feel free to drop me a note.

While there have not been any recent file updates, several are coming
soon, and there is currently a Disklavier performance competition under
way, which should yield some interesting files for download. Stay
tuned! For those who have a MIDI-only system, I suggest the Geibler
software for conversion. We are, however, considering a MIDI section
for those who cannot support the Yamaha format.

Enjoy!

Best Regards,
Jim Hendershot
