Larry Lobel writes, whether tongue-in-cheek or not, I'm not sure:
> It's my understanding that the Q in Q. David Bowers stands for

But, Larry, I doubt that Dave Bowers' mother named him "Quality"!
The three explanations I've heard for the QRS name are:
1) that it stands for "Quality, Real Service" (or alternatively
"Quality Roll Service";
2) that the name came from an early practice of someone's pigeonholing
certain order slip in the "Q," "R," and "S" slots of an alphabetically
arranged sorting table;
3) that it stands for nothing, rather like "Kodak."
I'm sure we'll hear from Ann Jones, QRS's MMD spy, with a better
answer, if there is one.
