A bit of counterpoint is in order on this subject. I happen to thrive
on "long narrowly focused replies". I believe that's an essential
element of understanding the topic of mechanical musical devices.
Since these devices were generally made in the past, it follows that
information about them must be disseminated or it will slowly vanish.
I can easily envision a future in which we will all be gone and what we
know will go with us unless it is known by others. I see this as an
exceptional opportunity to exchange information and help preserve
knowledge on this topic.
If I come upon extended info in the MMD daily blurbs that is of no
interest I can simply page down through it like flicking through the TV
channels. One man's trash is another man's treasure. I think the very
nature of understanding mechanical musical instruments is sorting
through mounds of trash to uncover that which we seek so much.
With the indulgence of our faithful editor, to whom we and posterity
owe a great deal, I believe it is proper to write what one would think
needs to be written --- no more and no less. Am I alone?
