Restoring Brass Escutcheons
By Norman Narmore

Hello everyone, I'm Norman Narmore, I live in Atlanta, and I'm
restoring two M. Schulz pianos, an Aria Divina Grand and an
(un-Recordo) upright, both at the same time. When I get tired of
endlessly gluing pneumatics and monkeying with the valves I try to
work on the aesthetics. I've had good success with painting, replating
the original nickel parts and polishing the brass, but now all the
brass Manufacturers ID and description tags in the spoolbox really look
cruddy.

Does anyone have a proper way to restore the small brass tags that
are all over my upright action? The black surface seems to be silk-
screened on flat brass rather than embossed where the letters are
raised by stamping (as it is on the grand), and the once shiny brass
has discolored and oxidized.

I recently saw a piano that was restored beautifully and the tags all
looked brand new but the owner/restorer was very mysterious about how
this was done. I haven't done anything to them except clean them
lightly with mild detergent and a toothbrush and even this seems to
deteriorate the black finish some.

I think that 14k gold plating might be the way to go but I before do
some irreparable damage, I thought should run this by the collective
experience of the MMD. Thanks

Norman Narmore
