D. L. Bullock asked about Leroy Shields items on roll. There is one,
issued a year or two back by QRS. It's 'Little Rascals Medley',
played by Alex Hassan, QRS XP387C.
Alex is a great pianist of syncopated piano. He works in Washington DC
and spent several years of lunch-times (really!) going through the entire
Library of Congress sheet music deposits, alphabetically, looking for
syncopated pieces by Billy Mayerl and the like. He's unearthed some real
rarities. More recently he's been doing his own show tune arrangements.
Real whirlwind stuff, just like a good old-fashioned piano roll but
played live!
There's also a new CD out from Stomp Off which consists (I think) of show
medleys. They wouldn't release any of his syncopated rarities, I was
told. Not commercial. The Billy Mayerl Society here in the UK has just
issued a CD of rarities.
The QRS roll sounds exactly like Alex. I would recommend it to anyone
interested in hot syncopated music. Thanks are due to QRS for issuing
such stuff.
