From the very beginning, I've appreciated the neat way that Jody and
Robbie have packaged the Mechanical Music Digest. Receiving it each day
as one E-Mail, the handy Table of Contents every day and the editors'
comments all have been enjoyable -- but little did I realize the true
value of an editor.
Recently I subscribed to an un-moderated E-Mail "digest" on another hoddy
subject. It's simply an automated address that re-sends each comment
mailed to every subscriber. Wow! Now I really value Jody's work.
In addition to finding some fifty separate E-Mails from the other group
daily, I have to weed through posted junk mail, unrelated advertising,
obscene jokes and what is known in the Internet world as "Flames":
countless ramblings of insults between rivals, brothers, sisters and all
sorts of disgruntled computer owners. You wouldn't believe it!
The MMD deserves your support. I'm sure many of you have no idea what
you'd be subjected to if the Digest was not moderated.

[ Editor's Note:
[
[ Yes, Mechanical Music Digest is a "moderated list-server", and --
[ somewhat like a small newsletter -- it definitely takes on the
[ personality of the "Editor du Jour," either Jody or me.
[
[ Once in a while an author will complain that his letter has been
[ modified during editing. Every evening I try to edit the articles
[ to conform to the grammatical and prose standards long-established
[ by newspapers and technical periodicals, so that our readers in non-
[ English-speaking lands can understand it. Sometimes I make a wrong
[ judgment, and I beg forgiveness for that.
[
[ Heated discussions are not suppressed. The Digest is an open forum,
[ and Jody and I simply maintain decorum, as it were. But we also don't
[ perpetuate interminable discussions, and thus there's been a few times
[ when we've said, "That's enough! Let's talk about something else!"
[
[ That's another nice feature of the moderated-list-server MMDigest!
