Beckwith Hammer Rail and Sustain Pneumatics
By Damon Atchison
I have a 1921 Beckwith player piano with a double valve stack. There is
a broken pneumatic attachment that I am getting around to finally fixing
now. It appears to have served two purposes. The first, is to activate
the sustain pedal. I am wondering, are most sustain pedal actions on 88
note rolls perforated to work with a lock and cancel pneumatic or just a
regular signal? I am wondering this because when I play the piano (by
hand) I usually use the sustain pedal a lot longer than what the rolls
do. The piano rolls just tap the sustain pedal and they rarely hold it
for more than two seconds.
The second purpose that this pneumatic attachment seemed to serve was to
activate the hammer rail. I have never heard of any perforations on
regular 88 note rolls that are specified for the hammer rail. Another
important fact I need to mention is that this is original equipment, it
isn't some attachment added on years after the piano was built. I have a
very difficult time identifying all these actions for myself, because
half of them were broken or disconnected from tubes or metal rails.
Like always, I greatly appreciate any assistance I am sent.
