Fire strikes again in south Turlock
By Marlene Bryant -- Central Valley News Service
TURLOCK (Calif.) -- Flames struck again this weekend at the Play-Rite
Music Rolls Facility, eight months after a major fire damaged the south
city business.
Jerry McDaniel, Turlock City Fire Department battalion chief, said
that circumstances surrounding the fire are questionable because of the
fire that occurred at the business at 401 S. Broadway in February,
when an estimated $900,000 of damage was done. "The cause of the first
fire was a plastic injection machine. The second fire, which is very
suspicious, is still under investigation," he said, adding that fire
officials are unsure of what the cause of the second fire was.
According to reports from the Turlock City Fire Department, the fire
began shortly after midnight and was through the entire structure when
the city and Turlock Rural fire departments arrived at the scene. The
fire was quickly brought under control but was difficult to extinguish
because of debris left from the previous fire at the site. The building,
which was deemed a total loss from the first fire, was not completely
burned to the ground. Neighbors were evacuated for their safety until
the fire was contained and then were allowed to return to their homes,
the fire department report said.
Turlocker John Malone, who is the manager of the business, said that
when he arrived at the scene the fire was still going. "We had been in
the process of tearing the building down. We had separated the metal and
wood into two piles and were about 20 percent done tearing it down.
Someone had lit the wood on fire. I have no idea of who did it," he
said.
Malone added he and his family do have plans to rebuild the business
at the same location, but it will depend on the settlement they receive
from the insurance company.
