With valuable advice from redoubtable player genius Jim Miller, and kind
encouragement from Wayne Stahnke and Robbie Rhodes, I have developed a
highly efficient, compact and powerful note control magnet-actuated
vacuum valve, which I have begun to manufacture for sale. During testing
this magnet-valve repeated perfectly against 100" vacuum at only six
volts, consuming only .159 watt per note; therefore power consumption for
thirty simultaneously played notes would be only about 4.77 watts.
The magnet-valve units are only 1" long and 1/2" in diameter. The magnet
casings are of machined steel, valve chambers are of solid precision-
machined brass, and valve facings are of molded silicone rubber.
Magnet-valves are available:
a) separately for in-line installation, at $5.50 each plus shipping
and handling;
b) in an enclosed, gasketed tracker bar interface which fits compactly
in any spoolbox; or
c) in a self-contained unit with holes for standard 5/32" fittings.
The latter two units also contain Laurent Coray's Octet Design MIDI
electronics, specially re-configured for this product, and eliminate the
need for hand wiring, requiring only a MIDI-in cable and a low-voltage
power source.
Including electronics, the first 100 units can be ordered from Broadmoore
Research Corporation for $1495 retail plus shipping and handling (weight
about 8 lbs.) on a first come first serve basis. Allow eight weeks for
delivery, less for individual magnet-valves.
A great deal of care and engineering effort has gone into these products,
and I feel confident that they will meet with the approval of even the
most particular MMD'ers in the areas of quality, performance and
durability. In any case, we guarantee them to do so.
I expect that many restorers will wish to avail themselves of the oppor-
tunity to make extra income by becoming local agents for these units and
to contact all of their previous restoration and repair customers, all of
whom are potential buyers. Several other developments promise to augment
these potential sales, which will be reported later.
