Hi, I have a question to all you Gulbransen lovers and experts out there.
I am rebuilding a Gulbransen upright and I am busy with the adjustments
and testing. I have restored a couple of Gulbransen models before but
this is a new one.
The problem is that the sustain pneumatic does not lift the pedal-rod
enough to lift the dampers from the strings. I can adjust it so that it
does this but then it does not have any free play and wont release the
dampers fully. I have checked the following to no avail:
1. Sustain pneumatic open size is correct according to the original as
well as previous documents I have.
2. Manual pedal works okay, although the felt in the pedal hole is very
thin to give it a longer stroke.
3. Manual sustain lever works but also does not lift the dampers quite to
my satisfaction.
4. Bushings in the sustain-rod inside the piano action are okay. Dampers
all lift evenly, bass and treble.
Somehow the lever relationship is incorrect from the moment when the
dampers do not damp properly until where they start lifting properly.
One could also say that the stroke is simply too long.
The only explanation I have so far is that the damper springs might be a
bit too strong, allowing the rod in the action to twist in itself, but I
somehow I remember that this type of problem causes the bass dampers to
lift before the treble dampers.
In short, I don't know how this could have happened. Can anyone help?
Regards,
Bernt W. Damm
