Player Organ Project
By Dick Beery

Previously I posted some basic information the residence theater organ
project I am undertaking. As a result many of you responded to me indi-
vidually with lots of really helpful information and I have attempted to
respond individually to all of you expressed an interest in my project.
I realize that maybe the preliminary information was too sketchy so I
have to update you with more details of the project. If any of you have
gone through what I am planning to do or have suggestions for me I would
appreciate hearing from you. Thanks in advance.

The following is a description of my recent organ purchase and my plans
for installation.

The organ started as a 9 rank Skinner in a church was converted to a
Theater Organ by Skinner for a gentleman in Long Island. Jim Wildman
(whom I purchased the organ from) then took it and collected theater
organ ranks so it is now 17 ranks with chimes, harp, etc., and has a
4-manual Marr & Coulton Console.

I am interested in learning of sources of information on organs. I am
also interested in finding a roll player unit to connect to the organ.
I want a player that will be able to control the stops in addition to
the keys. I need recommendations on the best type. I enjoy all types
of music but will probably use the player for theater/jazz music. I
also would prefer one that needs rebuilding. Long term plans include
making the organ MIDI compatible and also adding a reproducing piano
to it as a piano stop.

The organ is going to be installed in a music room I have built for
working on and displaying my player pianos. The room is separate from
my house and the basic dimensions are 25' x 50'. In one corner is a
15' x 10' greenhouse for my wife's gardening needs. The greenhouse is
completely isolated from having any air exchange with music area, but
there are lots of windows so you can enjoy the plants while listening
to the music.

A 20' x 25' workshop is divided off of one end of the building. This
leaves an L shaped area that is 30' x 15' x 14' with 2 different sloped
ceilings. There is also a balcony area above the workshop that looks
over the music area. My goal is to install the pipe in the attic and
balcony areas. It should also be noted that the sloped ceilings have
two different heights( 17' and 12'). I am not sure how the acoustics
will work out but it should be a fairly live room.

I appreciate all the response I have received by email over the past
few weeks and am looking forward to learning a lot with your help.

By the way the big move of the organ from NY to Ohio is going to happen
on Oct. 17th & 18th. I wonder how many years? before the first concert.
Seems that running my 65 person electronics company takes up most of my
time. I guess I need to figure out how to retire at 50!

P.S. I really want to use a roll player along with MIDI. This
desire comes from my player piano background. So I need sources and
recommendations on player mechanisms.
