Demand and the "Rich Man's Hobby"
By Bruce Clark

Let us look at television. Is *that* a rich person's hobby? I am
sure most of us have a television set, and over the years we all have
purchased replacements because of their short life span compared with
that of a player piano. Add up what we have spent on these short lived
electronic devices, and you will see that the amount is far more than if
we bought a player piano in the first place!

Many player pianos are 80+ years old, and still going. I wonder how many
television sets will be working well after 80 years! If you think of it,
a player piano is a wonderful investment, and far less expensive than a
television set. (Better entertainment too!)

One of the biggest problems regarding interest in our mechanical musical
instruments is the* lack of musical education*

Recently, I have made some interesting observations. I have tried my
best to educate others and make them aware of the music that our player
pianos and the wonderful reproducing piano rolls that can bring us.
Unfortunately there are only a very few people really interested in
music! They may claim to love it...but when it comes down to really
listening, * they don't !* They tune it out, and immediately start
talking over the music and wonder if the music can be turned down so they
may keep on talking about something not even related to music!

I have tried to introduce music in the lives of people for over 40 years!
If they do not have a genuine interest, you might as well save your time.
It won't work!

As for statistics: I have about 250 friends and neighbors. Out of them,
only four really enjoy listening to music! The rest, sort of pretend to
like it, but secretly wonder when the roll will be over so that they can
talk! Have any of you noticed that?

Why are we inundated with rock music and a great deal of what I call junk
music It sells, and is big bucks! That is the only reason! The great
classics seem to be fading off in the distance, which is tragic.
