I'm slightly surprised it takes someone from this side of the pond to
confirm that Aeolian Music Rolls were indeed an offshoot of the Aeolian-
American Corporation. I have a folder of old invoices downstairs to
prove it !
I bought these rolls in some quantity for only about two years around
1968-9, at which time they had not started the slanting lids. I would
have continued if their shipping department had not gone into some kind
of convulsion and started mixing the consignments on a regular basis.
This gave the shipments a bran-tub choice element which was not entirely
welcome.
The rolls were made to be sold with the company's keyboard-top Pianola
Vorsetzers and Hardman Duo spinet consoles. I've never seen any of the
former and the latter were withdrawn from the UK market as they only
retained pneumatic integrity in low humidity. Which is a polite way of
saying that the whole lot were an unmitigated disaster here !
All the rolls were punched with the notes half a perforation's width to
the right, compared to standard rolls. This could be a nuisance unless
you had manual tracking, or as I have on my 65/88n pushup, a single
adjustable finger.
With their J. Lawrence Cook and Hi Babit origin they covered a lot of
basic jazz and pop repertoire in a fairly simple and down-to-earth
fashion, though some are minor classics. Most of the best ones have
reappeared under the aegis of Klavier who bought the masters and even the
box-label rubber stamps as well !
