I enjoyed Joyce Brite's posting on newspaper marches. Is there
information on ordering the CD, Joyce?
As the article mentions, the Washington Post not only caused a major
musical stir, it also helped change the course of dancing styles. Prior
to that time, the waltz and schottische were the most popular dances.
The Washington Post helped move the two-step to the fore and was the
dance of choice until the Barbary Coast dances burst onto the scene
around 1910.
There was even a dance called the Washington Post, and my wife and I
learned portions of it a few years back. It's a fun two-step and gives
you a glimpse into the dancing styles that were carried forward into the
ragtime era.
In the course of running my roll auction, I only run into a few newspaper
marches. Of course, the Washington Post turns up from time to time, but
the others are more obscure. I believe I've come across one called the
National Star.
