We spend a lot of time discussing older mechanized instruments, but the
occasional reference to the MIDI acoustic pianos has me wondering how
many collectors on the MMD have one of the newer Disklavier/PianoDisc/
Pianomation systems, or the older [non-MIDI] Pianocorder units. More
importantly, how you are building up your music collections, and what
type of servicing issues have you experienced?
I'd like to hear from any owners of these systems preferably by email
(scott.currier@lodgenet.com or scocur@hotmail.com) and if there is
interest I will do a follow-up posting to the MMD giving a tally of how
many of us have these systems (broken down by make?).
This is purely curiosity on my part. As for me, I have a PianoDisc
system on one of the new MSR Knabe pianos. I bought it to sit next to a
Knabe Ampico A, but I wound up selling the older one before the new one
arrived. The piano took a lot of tweaking (voicing, reaming damper
bushings, etc.) before I was happy with it. I found it ironic that I
spent as much time fiddling with a brand new piano as I do on my older
pianos.
As for music, I download and re-work many MIDIs from the Internet and
convert them to play on the PianoDisc system, and I have just started
sequencing some MIDIs myself. I also have a number of PianoDisc and
Disklavier discs, and plan on buying some from QRS as well.
Regards,
Scott Currier
[ Could you extend your survey to include all "real" pianos which are
[ operated from digital data file? I'd like also to identify the folks
[ who have fitted piano-based orchestrions (e.g., Violano) for playing
[ from digital files of any sort. Their sources for music files would
[ be good to know, too. -- Robbie
