In reference to Larry Greenfield's note requesting information on the
Jewish ethnic piano rolls, I wanted to pass along a little piece of
information.
One of the roll artist names found on the Connorized Music Co. label (NYC
and St. Louis) is that of Sam A. Perry. He recorded many pop tunes for
this label, and especially quite a number of marches. Also, a couple of
novelty piano solos composed by Perry were published by Jack Mills, Inc.
during the mid-20s (i.e. as sheet music, not rolls). Some of the
Connorized march rolls are alternately inscribed as played by Samuel A.
Perlstein, so I take it that this was his actual name.
The info is this: Perlstein recorded a couple of original tunes for
Connorized, on Jewish themes, within the Connorized ethnic series. One
of these was the "Yiddish Shimmie" subtitled "Scheer - Scissor Dance."
This was issued on Connorized 20814 sometime in the 1920-22 time frame.
Another was "Schlugt Kapures Chusidal", subtitled "Jewish Dance." This
was on Connorized 20862. There probably were others, but I'm unaware of
them.
It's important to realize that roll companies other than QRS issued many
ethnic variety piano rolls during the 20s. For example, both Connorized
in NYC and Pianostyle in Brooklyn issued huge numbers of Italian and
Polish rolls, and it seems most all ethnic groups were represented by
perforated paper at some point.
All Best,
Frank Himpsl
