I have modified one MMD member's suggested method to prevent rolls from
tearing on rewind. I haven't torn any fragile rolls yet using the method
below.
One-time operation: Take the left flange off the roll, and cover it's
inner core section with a bit of cellophane tape - enough to make it's
fit on the roll a *little bit* tight, then replace the flange back on the
roll. If the flange fits tight already, you omit this operation.
1. Before I rewind the roll, while it's still in the spoolbox, I
carefully move the left flange away from the roll about 1/4" using a
twisting motion, so there is a 1/4" gap between the flange and where the
paper will theoretically rewind. Now there is plenty of room on the left
side of the roll to rewind at normal speeds. Since there will not be any
contact of the paper with the left-side spool, you may rewind at normal
speeds not having to worry about making the edges of the paper soft or
torn.
2. When the roll is rewound, simply tap the right end of the roll on a
hard surface to re-align the roll against the right flange.
3. Twist the left flange back into it's normal position up against the
paper.
4. Put an elastic around the roll and it goes back in it's box.
