Ampico Mechanisms Aren't Interchangeable
By Bob Conant

Dave Rodgers wrote that he needs a player for his Chickering Ampico.
One thing to watch out for on this is the stack. It should be adequately
specified.

Until recently, I thought all Ampico mechanisms were alike and inter-
changeable. In the process of restoring my Knabe A, however, I had the
opportunity to compare the stack from the Knabe with one from ??? which
I bought many years ago to install another piano.

I had always assumed that the pneumatics were placed on the stacks in
positions that allowed the correct piano scale to be accomplished and
that the same stack components were used.

Not so. This other stack was a full 3 inches shorter in overall length
than the one from my Knabe. Maybe they had several sizes to cover the
range of pianos with Marshall and Wendell using a smaller one and Mason
and Hamlin using a larger one with other makes using sizes in between.

The point is, when buying or selling a stack, make measurements of
the scale (where the break points in the stack are, the spacing of the
strikers and the overall stack length to the mounting screws on the metal
brackets. It may save some disappointment.

Most of the other components can be used with suitable mounting blocks
or brackets except for the sustain and soft pedal pneumatics. These are
usually specific to the piano but are not difficult to fabricate. The
fulcrum/bellcrank for the soft pedal can be a beast though.

The experts probably know this stuff better than I do but I hope this
helps a little.
