Hello -- My name is John Hunt and I'm glad to be a new subscriber and
delighted to find this resource. I hope someone can give me some
guidance in my latest find.
I happened across a National Automatic Music piano at an antique store,
and I need help in determining its value. Most parts appear to be
intact, though the "keyboard" area has been modified by adding glass
panes and interior lights to expose the inner workings. The
craftsman/mission style case has been refinished poorly. The upper
eight inches of the case (above the piano plate) have been replaced with
particle board, as has the top of the lid. The player mechanism looks
like a typical crusty, unrestored player action.
I understand National made two versions, one plain and later, one with
some sort of diorama featuring racing dogs. I assume this is the former
version, as there are no racing dogs in sight. The asking price is
$4250, which, considering the need for a total rebuild and refinish,
strikes my uneducated eye as about double what it might really be worth.
Can anyone suggest what this piece might be worth in its present
condition, as well as what it might be worth in properly restored
condition?
Thank you for your help!
John Hunt
