Duo-Art Music on Nimbus CDs
By Bill Wineburgh

I don't recall this being mentioned in the MMD, although there have been
reviews of several of these recordings in the MBSI Journal as well as in
the MBSoGB's Music Box.

Nimbus Records is in the process of issuing a lengthy set of CD's devoted
to the reproducing piano. They present major performances by legendary
pianists who recorded for the Aeolian Company in London and New York in
the early 1900's (of course!). The recordings are numbered in a series,
NI8801 through NI8811, with more to come.

Pianists include Hofmann, Bauer, Paderewski, Grainger, Horowitz,
Rubenstein and others.

The recordings use rolls from the collection of Gerald Stonehill who is
supposed to have about 99% of the Aeolian Company's Duo-Art output in his
collection of over 6,000 rolls. The reproducing mechanism for the
recordings is a robot constructed by the late Gordon Iles, inventor and
chief theoretician of the Aeolian Company in England. The free-standing
robot was completed in 1973 with Stonehill. The recordings were made at
the Concert Hall of the Nimbus Foundation on a Steinway grand.

I have the first eleven (11) in the series (which is expected to
include about fifty CD's) and I like them a lot. I've always liked
piano music, but have no room (or money) for a concert grand Steinway
(reproducer or not). Now I can at least enjoy listening to these CD's
of famous artists and composers on a reasonably good stereo system. I
expect that some of you reproducing piano aficionados will have more to
say about the quality of the recordings, the artists, and such.

Bill Wineburgh
