Personally I think Bob Billings has a great idea.
If a combined effort can be organized, a great deal of music could be
saved and enjoyed by all. My machine copies rolls quite well. However,
it is limited to copying, and no expression. But it should work well for
88-note rolls. With the tedious regulation I gave it today, it seems to
be quite accurate.
The questions I would ask would be.....
Would all people involved in the project be able to recoup at least
enough funds to keep their copying equipment in top shape?
Who would this committee be and how would they be selected?
Where would the collection of music be kept?
Who would look into the issue of copyrights that may be still in effect?
Would the music be available to others for a fee? How will that be
determined, and if so, how will the funds be used?
How would you avoid "bootleg" copying?
How would the committee insure that everybody involved actually helps each
other instead of competing?
Would the files be available for roll recutting?
What can be offered as an incentive to collectors to loan their prized
rolls?
If a standard format can be developed, will it be made available to all
concerned, so they can upgrade their equipment?
Can the people involved sell files to the public at large or only to the
entity?
Whatcha think, Bob?
