I am one of the many individuals who is working toward the eventual
transcription of piano rolls. It is a slow process when it is taken-on
as a hobby and without the full range of resources that would speed
development in a commercial approach.
Personally I do not intend to make much, if any, money on this project.
I am so impressed by the wonderful recordings of the past, that I want
to be involved in their preservation. I do not believe that there is
sufficient interest in the general population to reward this effort with
much profit.
I would like to see, as Leonardo Peretti mentions, a cooperation among
those involved in these efforts. It would be a large enough project
without duplication of effort and may never get done if each individual
works on his or her own.
Perhaps all of the people who are working on this type of project, who
are willing to freely share the results of their efforts, could describe
what they are doing and what they have to share.
Once this information is known, there may be someone with the necessary
organizational skills who could coordinate this effort.
I have a rather eclectic interest in mechanical, electrical and
electronic fields. I am a fast learner and can usually understand most
technical concepts. I have succeeded with numerous projects in the past.
My greatest skill and experience is with mechanical systems and metal
working. I am currently (slowly) building a perforator and gradually
exploring the various approaches to roll reading and scanning.
I probably have an average of 10 to 20 hours per week to apply to this
project. I would be willing to shift the focus of the work I am now
doing if my efforts could be better applied. I have many ideas and
opinions but also an interest in the ideas of others and how they may be
applied to this project.
