I was standing in the adhesives section of my favorite hardware store
( Highland Hardware - Atlanta, Ga. - www.highland-hardware.com ) when
one of their very knowledgeable sales people approached me to offer
assistance.
I had been looking at their hide glue and the sales guy pointed out the
bottle of "Titebond Liquid Hide Glue". He admitted that he wasn't sure
of the qualities of this product compared to the real deal, but he
pointed out that it had a low start-up cost and it was easy to work with.
As anyone who has worked with hide glue knows, you can't just walk into
the shop and start using hide glue!
I seem to recall a discussion thread here about the merits and
disadvantages of this hide glue in a bottle, but wondered what the final
consensus was among those who have now tried it. Note that the product
he sells is the Titebond brand and comes in a brown bottle with a label
that proudly claims it is, "the professional's choice."
Highland is a fantastic hardware store. It is the woodworkers dream with
just about every kind of tool (power and hand) you can imagine and a few
you never dreamed of. They have a lot of imported hand tools,
professional stain and finish products and more.
It is located in the Virginia-Highlands neighborhood in Atlanta, a trendy
area of coffee shops, what some describe as "quaint boutiques" and health
food stores. They have a 24-hour toll-free order line (800) 241-6748 and
I would recommend them as a supplier of anything wood related. And no, I
don't get a kick-back for promoting them!
