My friend Vit, a computer programmer in Silicone Valley CA, not only
enjoys beer and music, but he is also fluent in German, Czech and English!
I asked him about "Skoda lasky", the original Czech title for the
well-known melody of "Rosamunde" and "Beer Barrel Polka":
> Robbie, "Skoda lasky" means in German "Schade um die Liebe"; freely
> translated into English it's something like "Too bad it (love) is over".
The German lyric of Rosamunde is a young suitor singing of his
"Love Misfortunes". The chorus of Rosamunde is, roughly:
Rosamunde, give me your heart and say "Yes" !
Rosamunde, however, don't ask first your mama !
Rosamunde, believe me, I'm also true to thee,
'cause now this hour, Rosamunde, my heart is sure still free.
