Subject: Re: "Beer Barrel Polka"
Dear Robbie, dear Claus,
The "Beer Barrel Polka" was originally written by Jaromir Vejvoda
(1902-1988) in the late 1920's and was called "Skoda lasky" (whatever
this means in the Czech language). It first appeared in print in 1934
under this title.
There is an excellent recording by Vaclav Neumann and the Czech
Philharmonic orchestra on Supraphon (11 0725 - 2), a Czech label.
The melody traveled quickly to the States (as "Beer Barrel Polka") when
the Volstead Act was repealed. The very same melody is popular in
Germany as well -- as "Rosamunde" -- and most German beer drinkers would
not believe it is a Czech tune.
Cheers!
