Hi again, I mentioned a few MMD's ago about the Nicole Freres
interchangeable Overture cylinder music(al) box in a forthcoming auction.
I now have a couple of photos and a few more questions. The large tune
sheet has four airs for each of the six cylinders and the basic details
are:
Cyl 1: four overtures
Cyl 2: Four overtures
Cyl 3: two overtures, one march and one dance.
Cyl 4: Two waltzes and two operatic airs.
Cyl 5: All operatic (Incl. Largo al Factotum, one of my fave's)
Cyl 6: All operatic.
The heading on the tune sheet says 24 Overtures, however the cylinder
size is not correct. The cylinder length is 41 cm (about 16 inches) which
would put it almost in the 'Grand format' size. However, the diameter of
the cylinder appears to be just a touch wider than the norm for an
ordinary cylinder box at perhaps 2.5 to 3 inches. This is the appearance.
I have not yet seen it.
The comb appears to have two or three teeth off, there is a double spring
motor and the mechanism is bolted through the front and back of the case.
My question is, should this box have had 'fat' cylinders with it, or
would they have been too heavy for changing over?
