Wurlitzer Pot Metal Piano Valves
By Vince Negro

Are these 4-in-1 pot metal valve covers so bad that if they haven't
cracked yet its just a matter of time? The Wurlitzer player I have uses
these covers (none appeared to be cracked), but with all the 'red flags'
I've seen, I'm almost afraid to work with them. In addition, in the book
"Player Piano Servicing and Rebuilding" by A. Reblitz, the author seems
to dismiss working on players with these 4-in-1 pot metal covers as a
lost cause (page 149). So I guess the answer to Andy's inquiry is 'yes'
I'm interested in replacement valve covers that won't have the tendency
to crack.

Also, for testing purposes, the author of the above book advises the use
of an old electric piano pump or a 'suction box with speed control' set
for 7" of water; he cautions however that the latter may give invalid
results because of too much volume flow. Since I'm new to this, just
what is a 'suction box' and what flow rate (cubic feet per minute?)
is required for accurate testing?
