A great book about LMG is BAMBOULA! The Life And Times of Louis Moreau
Gottschalk, by S. Frederick Starr (Oxford University Press, 1995). An
absolutely wild man and tremendous talent, and the first American piano
player that the Europeans loved. This new book covers a lot of ground
that hasn't been covered before.
I got mine at the Ragtime Store, Scott Joplin International Ragtime

[ Editor's note:
[
[ Dick, your description of Gottschalk almost fits his biographer !
[ Fred Starr is well-known in the Trad Jazz circles as the leader of
[ the New Orleans Repertory Orchestra, a jazz band which enjoys
[ re-creating 'live' the scratchy phono recordings of early jazz.
[ Dr. Starr is also a university president, a fluent Russian speaker,
[ and a regular advisor to the U.S. State Department on Russian and
[ Soviet matters. I'm sure the Gottschalk book is wonderful reading.
