In digest.97.05.01 I made a request for voluntary financial support
for Digest.  I reported at that time that Robbie and I have agreed
that we will apply funds received first the cost of equipment and
communications fees, and we'll split any amount over that in an
equitable manner as compensation for our editing and administrative
time.

We are concerned that noone should be excluded from participating
in the Digest because they cannot afford to provide support for
the Digest.  As a consequence I emphasized that support is voluntary
that the amount provided should be determined by the value of the
Digest to each individual subscriber.

To date we have received about 3 dozen checks.  The amounts and
frequency of arrival of checks have been tapering off.  Perhaps
those who were the most enthusiastic about sending generous
contributions have already done so.  To those of you who
have sent checks, my sincere thanks.  To those who also sent
letters, pictures, flyers, and the like, I want to say how
much I've enjoyed the mail.

I've received a number of requests from people asking me to just
specify the "right" amount, or the amount that will make Robbie
and me feel "appreciated".  I still feel there is no right
amount.  Send something.  It will be appreciated, and it WILL
help.  If you decide later that it wasn't enough, don't wait as
long before you send more.

In considering your level of support, I want to remind people
that I consider the printed journals and activities of the various
mechanic music related societies discussed here important.  They can
provide you with connections to organized and private tours of
collections, conventions, organ rallies, auctions, social events, etc.
I consider membership in at least one such society a must for anyone
serious about mechanical music.  Please be generous with us, but don't
spend it all here.  If you're not a member of one of the national
societies (and a local chapter) please consider joining one.

A number of US and non-US subscribers have expressed interest in
providing support via VISA and/or MasterCard.  I have a merchant card
processing application pending with my bank.  I hope that within a week
the account will be set up.  Because e-mail is not secure, we will
only be able to accept credit card transactions via paper mail.  I'll
make another announcement when the account is set up explaining how to
provide MMD financial support via credit card.
