Wurlitzer Player Harp
By Nancy Fratti

Hi! Well...I'll answer one of those non-music box queries that are so
prevalent on MMD!

At a recent East Coast Chapter Meeting in Binghamton (NY) the MBSI East
Coast Chapter members were treated to a tour of Harvey Roehl's collection
(in Vestal, NY). In that collection is a player harp. It was
demonstrated for us and it was a marvelous machine to watch and hear!

Undoubtedly, Bob Conant can supply lots of info on that machine for us
all! Being a music box oriented person, I cannot accurately tell you if
this was an original or a repro machine (yes, there were a few repros,
I'm told). But, knowing Harvey, my money would be on it being an original!

How 'bout some more music box 'stuff'? We music box buffs are yawning
over all the MIDI controversy!

 [ Editor's note:
 [
 [ Well, I've a question, Nancy:
 [
[ Player zithers have been built which operate by punched metal disc, and
[ also by a paper roll. Instead of plucking a metal tine, a string is
[ plucked. Does either version qualify as a musical box? Wouldn't a player
[ banjo or player harp qualify? Is the size of the instrument a factor?
 [
[ What _is_ a musical box? Must it operate from only a cylinder or disc?
[ Someday a great Japanese inventor will probably make a Midi Music Box
 [ ("Batteries not included") !
