In reply to Jim Canavan's posting on the Digest concerning the "modern
nickelodeons" he had seen at an antique show, I believe I saw the same fellow
just last month at a shopping mall antique show. The piano cases were ornate
and he had installed stained glass panels to show the action. I talked
with him and he said most all his pianos were built between 1895-1916. None
were players originally. In fact, he said he really didn't know anything
about restoring a player mechanism. These pianos had nickelodeon kits he had
purchased through Ragtime in California. I didn't bother to check out if the
pianos themselves had been restored. What he was doing didn't really
interest me although there were several people who seemed really interested
in what he had to offer. He is a young fellow (late 20's?) and he owns
Vintage Piano Works in Louisville, TN. I can supply his name and address to
those who are interested. I let him know about MMD, but after reading Jim's
comments, he may not want to reveal himself! By the way, is this Ragtime
company any good (reputation, quality of supplies)? I'm thinking this might
be the same place that the gentleman traded his antique truck for a
nickelodeon kit.
