I restored a 5' 8" Mason & Hamlin Ampico "A" a couple of years ago,
including restringing and action work. This was one of the finest sounding
pianos I have ever heard in my 30 years as a restorer.
Unfortunately the piano was in a fire at the customer's house, which badly
damaged veneer on the lid, case, etc. The soundboard and plate were
somewhat discolored due to smoke, but suffered no other damage. The
insurance company paid the customer, who decided not to restore the case,
and the insurance company then sold me the piano.
I corrected all functional smoke damage to the player and piano, and it
sounds superb! The case just needs a lot of veneer regluing and
refinishing, etc.
I don't know what to charge for the piano, so I suppose I will accept bids
for it, if anyone is interested. Or, I would consider selling the restored
mechanism to someone with an identical piano with no player.
