Hi there just thought I'd send you all along some information on a couple
of books I just found out about.
1; "Downright Upright" - a history of the Canadian Piano Industry by
Wayne Kelly 2nd edition
This book is a wonderful collection of information on the Piano and
Reed/Pipe Organ Industry in Canada during the 19th and 20th centuries.
160 pages softcover loaded with pictures a must have book for anyone who
loves organs and pianos. listings include 157 piano companies in Canada
and a large but very incomplete listing of Pipe Organ Builders and
Servicemen in Canada.
2: "Under the Sign of the Big Fiddle" - a history of the R. S. Williams
Piano/Pipe Organ/ Musical Instrument Firm
This is a new book just released last year. I don't have a copy yet (It's
in the Mail) Mr. Williams was a home town boy (Hamilton Ontario) who
made the big times in the piano and organ trade. the Williams made about
73,000 pianos plus band instruments and pipe organs from 1890 to 1930
and employed 275 people in 1921. The title refers to the sign on the
William's Store in Toronto
The books should be available in your local bookstore (yea right!) or
if all else fails as it usually does with "serious books" try calling
the publisher. . .
