Hello Digesters, Since we seem to be enjoying a few organ threads right
now, I figure now's the time to sleuth out some info on a possibly
long-gone organ builder and repairer.
Last fall, I acquired a *very* miscellaneous assortment of wood and metal
pipes which were part of the 'decor' of one of those restaurants with the
big theatre organ for family entertainment. The pipes were meant to be
ornamental only, and were never meant to be played again, especially by
the meatheads that put the pipes up with big spiral nails and silicone
adhesive. (I think that most of the surviving pipes are restorable,
although the gaps in the ranks are far more troubling.)
Anyway, in the process of dealing with the worst of the damage (nail
removal, preliminary attempts at silicone removal) I found a service tag
folded up and stuffed inside one of the pipes. A portion of the tag has
been lost, but what remains reads:
> MALTON, WEBB
> Organ Builders
> CH.4-4721
>
> We have this day _________________________________________ tuned and
> regulated the organ of this church and trust it will be satisfactory.
>
> G. ROLAND WEBB
>
> Re ___________________________________
>
> Organ Tuning and Repairing Organs rebuilt & [...]
> Yearly Contracts Organ [...]
My questions for the assembled multitude are:
- does anybody know anything about this company?
- where were they geographically located?
I presume from the phone number that the tag dates from anywhere from
the 1930s through the 1950s. Comments? Thanks for any input,
Colin Hinz
