Seek Thorens Replacement Comb
By J. B. te Pas

Dear Hauke, You can call me Johan of course, though I prefer J. B. as
proposed by Mr. Kravitz. It sounds a bit more international in my
opinion. Thank you for your speedy reaction. Also many thanks to
"Jody", the centre of the whole caroussel I believe.

I shall give you a description of my children's music box. Wooden box,
in mm: length l98, height 80,9 including lid of 28, bottom protected
by 4 brass nails on the corners, box finished brownish-red, lid on the
outside decorated with a decalcomania (I hope this word exists in Eng-
lish), showing a kind of Bavarian boy (or a little Wilhelm Tell), pipe
in his mouth, hat on the edge of the table and this all in a romantic
circle of flowers.

There is a hole for the handle. If you want music you have to turn all
the time. Reminds me of the American song: "Organ-grinder come to town,
turn your handle all around".

The inside of the box shows a poor landscape, boat on a river, horse and
cart plus driver on the road and a cheap farm. This all in beautiful or
ugly colours (depending on your taste). The handle has an "s" shape.

Now the technical part. The heavy, cast-iron base bears the serial
number 180 in black. (Stamped with ink). The free part of the base has
an ornamental checked net. The whole base has the size of l35 x 62 mm
and has been colored in gold. It has been fixed to the wooden base with
3 screws.

The comb has (should have) 30 teeth, width is 4l,2 mm, total height 40 mm
and for every tooth stands a disc, diameter ca. l6 mm, having several
projections, probably touched by the projections of the turning disc and
on their turn touching the teeth. There is a lever, which can be turned
90 degrees in the horizontal plane in order to keep the disc in place.

Now the discs: There are l2 or l3 discs, diameter 114 mm, including 2
teeth. Each disc has a centre hole of 9.6 mm.

Now the titles of the discs, as far as I can decipher them:

  No. 20 Mozart Klosterglöckchen(Cloches Monastere)
No. 52 Mozart Ein feste Burg (Choral de Luther)
  No. 723 Mozart Lauschige Nacht
  No. 58 Oh, Du Fröhliche
No. 7l0 Mozart Die Wachtparade kommt
No. 745 Mozart Unter dem Lindenbaum
  No. 34 Mozart Stille Nacht
  No. 4l7 Mozart Aida Marche
  No. 704 Mozart Edelweiss
No. 9l Mozart Befiehl Du Deine Wege
No. 809 Mozart Puppchen Du Bist Mein Augen...???(unlesbar)
  No. 97 Mozart Fern im..???(unlesbar)
  No. 84 Mozart Betteist....nt Marsch.

That's it. I hope it is sufficient.

And I hope somebody can help me to a exactly fitting comb. It seems to me
that changing the hole(s) in a comb is not that easy.

Many thanks for reading all this and helping me the way you did; rapidly
and spontaneously. Wish you all the best with your wonderful hobby.
(I am just a collector of antique surveying equipment, and too old to
change.) But I remain interested in anything that can make my children's
music box a complete one. Thanks again.

Kind regards, Yours J. B. te Pas
