Mechanical Instrument in the Movies
By John McClelland

HI.

Today we were watching a new movie just out on video _The Secret
Agent_, adapted from a book by Joseph Conrad. It starred Bob Hoskins,
Robin Williams & Gerard Depardieu. The setting was in London during the
1880's. In one segment featured was a Steck Upright Pianola Piano,
playing an 88 note roll, on and off in a cafe, for about 8 or 9 minutes
of the movie. The piano was deliberately out of tune, and would have
the audience believe that players existed at that time. It's an
interesting movie: no heroes & everyone loses in the end; but Conrad is
like that.

FYI, so there are new movies that have mechanical instruments in them,
since this was released in 1995.
