Playing Disklavier Disks for MIDI Output
By John Lanphere

I was interested to see that the Ampico Rachmaninoff rolls are now
available from Wayne Stahnke at Live Performance. All of the Live
Performance disks are first class and are highly recommended.

But, you ask, how can I play them without owning a Disklavier piano?

Fortunately, Yamaha has provided us a way to do that. The Disklavier
files are in a special Yamaha sequencer format created by the QX3 known
as "ESEQ." Yamaha sells a portable Disk Player unit known as the MDF2
"MIDI Data Filer." It plays and records Standard MIDI File Format 0
and also plays the Yamaha ESEQ format files delivering standard MIDI
output from the unit. This MIDI data stream can then be used with
almost any MIDI synthesizer module or in particular with dedicated
piano sound generators such as the Roland P-55 or the new General Music
PRO-1 module.

The results are very excellent and allow those of us who do not have
space for a real piano to enjoy the wonderful sound of Ampico, Duo-Art,
Disklavier and other recordings in our homes. My system has provided
may hours of enjoyment.

The MDF2 has a list price of $450 and is available on the street for
about $380 or less. Any Yamaha Music Store dealer should be able to
provide you with a specification data sheet.
